Pedro Fruet

Biologist

Biologist, graduated from the Universidade do Vale dos Sinos. He obtained a double doctorate in Biological Oceanography from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande and Flinders University, Australia.

A founding member of the NGO Kaosa, he has been the volunteer coordinator of the Marine Mammal Laboratory at the “Prof. Eliézer de C. Rios” Oceanographic Museum since 2014, where he develops research and outreach activities. He has a strong background in population ecology and broad experience in the development and management of research and conservation projects focused on cetaceans, through which he seeks to integrate science, traditional knowledge, and public policies. He has published over 30 scientific articles in prestigious international journals. In 2021, he was awarded by the Whitley Fund for Nature for his outstanding contribution to the conservation of the Lahille’s bottlenose dolphin. He served as Secretary of Environment and Sustainability of the City of Rio Grande (2021–2024), where he stood out for leading processes of environmental legislative innovation, project implementation, and the management and creation of protected areas. He currently works as an associate researcher at Kaosa and as the coordinator of the Conservation and Management Plan for the Lahille’s bottlenose dolphin of the International Whaling Commission (IWC).
