Pedro Castilho

Biologist

Biologist (UFSC), with a PhD in Zoology (UFPR) and Post-Doctorate in Archaeology at the National Museum/UFRJ. He completed his PhD in zooarchaeology of marine mammals, including the genus Tursiops.

Since 2007, he has been a professor at the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC), teaching undergraduate courses in Fisheries Engineering and Biological Sciences, as well as in the Graduate Program in Territorial Planning and Socio-environmental Development (PPGPLAN). He has participated in working groups of IBAMA and ICMBio focused on the conservation of marine mammals and is a collaborator of the National Action Plan for the Conservation of Toninhas and Small Cetaceans (PAN) of ICMBio. He has been part of REMASUL since 2012, working on the Beach Stranding Protocol of the Whale Sanctuary Area (APA) of the Southern Right Whale. He is a certified instructor by ICMBio/CMA for disentangling and releasing large cetaceans. Since 2015, he has been the coordinator of Section 1 of the Beach Monitoring Project of the Santos Basin, carried out by UNIVALI. He has developed research related to osteology, emerging diseases, ecology, distribution, and behavior of both small and large cetaceans.
