Lorenzo Von Fersen

Biologist

Born in Argentina, Lorenzo Von Fersen began his academic journey studying biology at the University of Córdoba, Argentina.

In 1984, he moved to Germany to continue his education at Ruhr University, where he embarked on an ambitious Ph.D. program focused on the cognitive abilities of pigeons. His research provided valuable insights into avian cognition and contributed to a broader understanding of animal psychology. After completing his Ph.D., Lorenzo shifted his research interests to marine mammals. He began conducting research on the cognitive abilities of dolphins, exploring their complex behavior and intelligence. This shift led him to work in Switzerland, England, and the United States, where he collaborated with renowned scientists and developed expertise in studying marine mammal cognition. Lorenzo's diverse research experience brought him to the Nuremberg Zoo in 1991, where he is currently the Research and Conservation Coordinator. Driven by a strong commitment to conservation, Lorenzo founded YAQU PACHA in 1992. As president of the organization, he leads efforts to conserve marine mammals and their habitats in Latin America. YAQU PACHA's mission is to protect these species, raise awareness of the ecological challenges they face, and promote sustainable practices. Under Lorenzo's leadership, the organization has made significant strides in ensuring the survival of marine mammals in their natural environment.
