José Lailson Brito Junior

Oceanographer

Holds a degree in Oceanography from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (1997), a Master's in Environmental Sciences from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (2000), and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2007). 

Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro and an Associate Researcher at the Eduardo Penna Franca Radioisotope Laboratory of the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He has dedicated his work to the study of aquatic environments, with an emphasis on marine and freshwater nekton. His research focuses mainly on the following topics: bioaccumulation of trace metals (e.g., Hg, Cd, and Sn) and persistent toxic substances (e.g., organochlorines) in aquatic ecosystems, as well as the ecology and conservation of aquatic mammals.

He is currently a grantee of the Young Scientist of the State of Rio de Janeiro Program (FAPERJ) and the Prociência Program (FAPERJ/UERJ), a CNPq Productivity Fellow, and the Head of the "Izabel Gurgel" Laboratory of Aquatic Mammals and Bioindicators at the State University of Rio de Janeiro.

In 2016, he won the Faz Diferença Award, promoted by the newspaper O Globo and the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro (FIRJAN). This award recognizes the work, dedication, and talent of Brazilians who, in various fields, served as an inspiration to the country and the world in 2015.
